A Farmer's Work is Never Done
Tuesday, 24 August 2010 12:36
The season is halfway through and we are busy planning for 2011. With all of our new land, we have been carefully deciding what pieces we will put in to production next year and what we will leave fallow. Peter has been preparing the land for winter so that will be ready to use in the spring.
Peter has plowed a new section of our fields that was once used for hay. Covered with grass, the tractor dragged the plow blades through the earth. By turning the soil over and chopping up the sod, it eases our work for next year. When you have to compete with grass and weeds on your farm, it makes for a tough work day. Although these things will always be present, plowing does make all the difference.

In one section of our fields, we have planted buckwheat. This will grow tall and is used for a cover crop when we will no longer be using the land for the season. Buckwheat will add nutrients to the soil and keep the soil fresh and ready for use next season.
As you can see, a farmer's work is never done. Here we are only halfway through one season and we are already moving ahead for next season.
We will be harvesting the winter squash, gourds, and pumpkins and storing them in our barns within the next week. Storing them in an area that has good air circulation helps keep them fresh until they are ready for distribution.
Our annual Farm Festival is around the corner, September 11th! Please see the newsletter on the left hand column menu for more information. Also check out our photo gallery, as more pictures have been added!
We hope to see you September 11th!

Almost Half Way
Monday, 16 August 2010 12:04
Summer has been flying by and fall is right around the corner. It is hard to believe that next week will mark the half way point of our CSA season! We have been busy working just as if summer just began. There is another work visit coming up on Saturday August 21st. This is a time for members to come to the farm and work along side us for the day. With all of our new land and new members there is certainly more work, and we would love it if many of you could make it! Please check with your site coordinators to see if there are any car pool's available.

Stoneledge Farm Tomato Varieties
There are many different varieties of tomatoes. Each one offering something similar yet different from the other. Stoneledge Farm takes time every year in choosing which varieties of tomatoes they will plant for the upcoming CSA season.
